In recognition of Steenberg as one of the Cape’s top gourmet and wine destinations, both its restaurants were awarded the coveted American Express Platinum Card Fine Dining Award in Cape Town earlier this week.

Selected among only 13 restaurants in the Cape Peninsula from a total of 78 restaurants across South Africa, Catharina’s Restaurant received this accolade for the 14th year. Trendy cellar door restaurant Bistro Sixteen82 made its debut onto this coveted list, only a couple of weeks before its second birthday, as one of only four new restaurants on the list.

The American Express Platinum Card Fine Dining Awards are widely recognized as a credible barometer for discerning diners seeking a quality dining experience. The selection criteria include quality and creativity of cuisine, service, wine list, décor and ambience as well as overall excellence and American Express card acceptance, with strong emphasis on maintaining high levels of consistency.

According to well known restaurant critic, Victor Strugo, who headed up this year’s judging panel along with respected ‘foodie’ Tamsin Snyman, the awards are more significant and relevant than ever before. He emphasized the need for greater recognition of excellence against a backdrop of increasing mediocrity in the South African restaurant industry. Bistro Sixteen82 received a special mention from Strugo who cited this popular, informal eatery as ‘somewhat of a local’ for him whenever he visits Cape Town.

Adding to the excitement is news hot of the press that Catharina’s has for the sixth consecutive year received a top score in the annual Diners Club Wine list Awards (2011), this year as one of only 42 Diamond Award winners in the Western Cape to score more than 90% Catharina’s offers an expert wine pairing service and an award-winning wine list, which includes a selection of certified organic wines, as well as a superb selection of ‘food’ wines from the Steenberg and Klein Steenberg ranges.

Says proud Graham Beck Hospitality GM for Steenberg, Gaby Gramm: ‘Our drive is really to make Steenberg a world-class destination in all aspects, and an accolade such as this inspires us to continually improve on our overall service offering. Together with their teams, Executive Chef Garth Almazan at Catharina’s Restaurant and Brad Ball who heads up the team at Bistro Sixteen82 ensure that a 5-star gourmet food and wine experience is offered at both our restaurants, all year round.  We are especially encouraged that Bistro-style fare has found its way into the mix for modern fine dining, and that it is recognized by this prestigious awards platform.’

The American Express Platinum Card Fine Dining Awards add to an impressive list of accolades received by Steenberg in 2011. These include the Steenberg Hotel voted as Best Luxury Hotel in Africa by www.TripAdvisor.com, the world’s largest travel site in its 2011 Travellers’ Choice awards, and Steenberg Vineyards named Global Winner Wine Tourism Services in the Great Wine Capitals’ Best of Wine Tourism Awards 2011.
