DURBANVILLE HILLS BIESJES CRAAL REAPS ANOTHER GOLD

The Durbanville Hills single-vineyard 2009 Biesjes Craal Sauvignon Blanc took gold at the recent 2010 Veritas Wine Awards held in Cape Town. .
This follows hot on the heels of the impressive gold award received for this wine at the 2010 Michelangelo Wine Awards and last year when it was named as one of Wine Magazine’s Top 10 Sauvignon blancs.
According to cellarmaster Martin Moore, the wine shows its exceptional ability to not only perform well when enjoyed young but when aged it develops a complexity and structure that match very few sauvignon blancs.
“Grapes for the Biesjes Craal Sauvignon Blanc are sourced from a single vineyard block and the wine is only made in exceptional years. Although one can enjoy this wine immediately, it is made with maturation in mind due to a well-balanced level of fruit, tannins and acidity. And we are very proud of the wine’s ability to reel in the awards whether it’s newly released or has been developing further in the bottle. “
Moore says by aging the 2009 Biesjes Craal for a further two years the wine will become softer with more complex fruit flavours. “The nose is a well balanced combination of fruity green pepper, gooseberry and asparagus with earthy flavours. On the palate the wine is crisp and fresh with tropical fruit underlined by green pepper and a slight grassiness. A long lingering aftertaste reminds one of lime and winter melon. Enjoy this wonderful wine, on its own, slightly chilled, or served with seafood and pastas.”
