Durbanville Hills Wines received three gold medals across its three wine ranges at the 15th annual Michelangelo International Wine Awards. A panel of international judges bestowed these on the 2011 Durbanville Hills Sauvignon Blanc, the 2008 Rhinofields Merlot and the 2008 Caapmans Cabernet Sauvignon Merlot blend.

The 2011 Durbanville Hills Merlot Rosé, 2009 Rhinofields Chardonnay and 2009 Rhinofields Outer Valley Sauvignon Blanc received silver.

Cellar master Martin Moore said he was delighted with the result especially as each of the three gold awards went to a different range.

“Since our first vintage in 1999 we’ve extended our product range to include the reserve Rhinofields range and a vineyard-specific range of wines only made in exceptional years. The three ranges showcase the diverse terroir of the area and have their personalities firmly rooted in the hills of Durbanville. We have been able to create remarkable wines in the past decade that truly capture the unique flavour spectrum found in the magnificent valley slopes.”

Moore said the winery named its reserve Rhinofields range after the threatened indigenous renosterveld vegetation to raise awareness of its possible disappearance. The names of the vineyard specific-range – Caapmans, Biesjes Craal and Luipaardsberg – in turn pay homage to the early years of wine-growing in the area.

He added that these wines were not made for competition purposes but were available at liquor outlets countrywide.

“We firmly believe award-winning wines should be available to consumers to enjoy. We continuously strive to ensure consistent quality and freshness, no matter the bottling date, so consumers can be assured the wine they tasted a few months back is the exact same blend as the one they are drinking now.”

Durbanville Hills Wines also recently received the national category award at the 2011 South African Terroir Wine Awards for its 2009 Durbanville Hills Biesjes Craal Sauvignon Blanc (available from the Vinoteque on info@Vinoteque.co.za or telephone number (021) 809-8280) and for its 2011 Merlot Rosé which is available nationally.

The 2011 Durbanville Hills Sauvignon Blanc which retails for about R50 per bottle is available nationally while the 2008 Rhinofields Merlot and 2008 Caapmans Cabernet Sauvignon Merlot are stocked mainly by speciality wine shops. It is also available from the Vinoteque at info@Vinoteque.co.za, telephone number (021) 809-8280 or the Durbanville Hills cellar.
