MICHAEL BROUGHTON, Chef at Terroir Restaurant at Kleine Zalze, is celebrating another Top 10 Eat Out Award having garnered 6th place with the publication of the 2011 Eat Out Magazine. The Awards were announced on Sunday evening, 28 November, at the 2010 Eat Out Top 10 Awards Ceremony in Cape Town.
Sharing Top 10 placement with Stellenbosch eateries, Jordan, Overture and Rust en Vrede, Michael was generous in his praise for his fellow Winelands’ winners: “Stellenbosch has over the last few years gained prominence in food circles. More and more customers are finding that the lure of vineyards, impressive mountain views, good food, and fine wines are simply too irresistible to pass up on. For the team and myself to be recognised again amongst my fellow chefs is humbling as we are all colleagues in what is at present very difficult trading conditions.’
Michael further adds, ‘Together we are helping to place Stellenbosch at the forefront of South African cuisine – which is an honour in itself. I am very grateful for the recognition received from the Eat Out judging panel, and would also like to thank the entire team at Terroir and Kleine Zalze for their support over the past year.”
Michael revisited his Johannesburg culinary roots at the recent Stellenbosch Wine Routes Summer Place Festival in Gauteng. Many of Michael’s past patrons from the North were delighted to be able to taste his fine fare again. Incidentally it was in Gauteng in 2000 and 2001 where he garnered his first two (2) Top 10 awards at his restaurant, Broughton’s.
In October 2004 Kobus Basson – Managing Director and co-owner of Kleine Zalze appointed Michael to Stellenbosch to open Terroir. In the six years that this winelands dining destination has been open it has received five (5) Top Ten Eat Out Awards and in 2006 won both Eat Out’s Customer Service Excellence Award and Restaurant of the Year Award.
Terroir is open for lunch and dinner Monday to Saturday as well as Sunday lunch. For reservations, call (27) (21) 880 8167 or email terroir@kleinezalze.co.za
