FIRST EVER STEENBERG VINEYARD TRAIL RUN A ‘RUNAWAY’ SUCCESS

Steenberg Vineyards in the Constantia Valley held its first Steenberg Vineyard Trail Run on Heritage Day, 24 September this year. Over 300 avid walkers, runners and wine enthusiasts participated in this sold-out fun event, many having donned fancy dress costumes as their favourite ‘character, fruit or icon’, to enjoy a brisk walk or leisurely run along the scenic trail through Steenberg’s vineyards. While many visitors were drawn to the ‘feel-good’ factor of spending this special public holiday in a glorious setting on a wine farm, others were excited at the prospect of winning one of the fabulous prizes on offer.
The grand prize of ‘winning your weight in Steenberg wine’ proved an irresistible draw card, and saw the coveted Best Costume prize awarded to joint winners: the team from the Steenberg Golf Club with their funky ‘grape box’ costumes, (Emma Mays and Shannon Russell), tying with the all-girl ‘Prisoners’ team, Paula Wilson and Sarah de Veenstra, who pulled off a very realistic prison uniform.

Says Sales and Marketing Manager for Steenberg Vineyards, Anetha Homan: ‘The whole idea behind the Steenberg Vineyard Trail Run was to provide an opportunity for friends and families to get together in the spirit of fun followed by an enjoyable afternoon in the relaxed ambience of our wine farm. Thanks to Top Events, our partners in this venture, the event came together seamlessly and our visitors had a wonderful time. This year there were many wine lovers among participants and supporters, who ambled over to buy a bottle if wine to complement the picnic meal which they enjoyed on the lawn outside the winery. Several lingered at the Wine Tasting Bar or sank into the couches at our Tasting Lounge, enjoying tastings of our wines.’
She continued to say that plans are already in place for the 2012 event, which will again take place on Heritage Day. This time around though, there will also be super ‘braai’ activities on offer, to add a distinct ‘Steenberg touch’ to what has also become known as ‘National Braai Day’!

Marius Malan grew up on their family farm, Staart van Paardeberg, on the foothills of the Paardeberg Mountains. Grape growing and producing wine run in the family and it was always Marius's dream to become a winemaker.
