Gourmet Lane, Clover Demo Kitchen, award-winning restaurants & ‘munch’ more

A multitude of wines will share the spotlight with all things culinary when the 10th annual Stellenbosch Wine Festival dons its apron for an epicurean extravaganza to accompany the region’s finest vintages from 28 to 31 July at the Paul Roos Centre.

Ranging from the buzzing Gourmet Lane to the enlightening Clover Demo Kitchen, there is so much more taste to this year’s festival line-up than just the typical glass of wine and a shoulder rub with a famous Stellenbosch winemaker. Embracing the marriage of good food and wine, the Stellenbosch Wine Festival has teamed up with local restaurants to showcase and share their signature dishes with food and wine lovers – all under one roof in the Gourmet Lane.

These flavoursome restaurants who will each whip up their own food and wine pairing experience, include three fabulous winery restaurants – Knorhoek Estate’s Towerbosch Earth Kitchen, known for its enchanting, old fashioned culinary bliss; The Restaurant @ Clos Malverne which prides itself in world food with an earthy sophistication; and the magnificently appointed restaurant at Waterkloof Estate. Completing the culinary quartet is De Volkskombuis, one of the oldest restaurants in Stellenbosch, which will lend proudly South African charm to the Gourmet Lane.

The Clover Demo Kitchen where local chefs will be cooking up a storm is a must for festival goers who want to unleash their inner master chef. This year’s demo menu includes Home Entertaining at its Best by Camilla and Russell Wasserfall and De Meye Wines; Between the Slices – when wine personalities Emile Joubert and Neil Pendock will wow you with their somewhat quirky personalities, knowledge and exciting sarmie combinations; and Kitchen Vixen – featuring Bianca du Plessis, popular food writer, television personality and Pinot Noir lover.

George Jardine of The Restaurant at Jordan says Cheese if you Please while Gregory Czarnecki of The Restaurant at Waterkloof celebrates his French Connection with the farm’s award winning wines. Official Festival chef, Craig Cormack of Sofia’s restaurant at Morgenster, who is also known as a salt alchemist will round off the weekend with his Alchemy of Salt crusade, during which he will pair salts from around the world with Fleur du Cap Wines.

Raffle tickets will be sold at each demonstration, giving you the chance of winning a wonderful Clover hamper. Funds raised from the ticket sales will be donated to the Clover Mama Afrika Project.

Founded in 2004, The Clover Mama Afrika initiative is part of a corporate social responsibility programme, which serves as a source of support by supplying the necessary skills and equipment to generate an income, run a business and, most importantly, uplift spirits of special women who are making a difference in their various communities. The project is based on the understanding that communities must still be tasked with the governance of their own well-being. Clover plays a supportive role by focusing on self-help projects such as sewing, cooking, baking and food gardens to improve the standard of living within these communities.

This year, as part of the Stellenbosch Wine Festival’s social upliftment and skills development endeavours, one selected ‘Mama’ will also get the rare opportunity to enrol for a training stint at Overture Restaurant, former Eat Out Restaurant of the Year, where she will obtain valuable experience in operating and ‘standing the heat’ in a professional kitchen.
