Wines make every meal special but none more so than Chardonnay which still remains one of the most celebrated dry white wines, says Durbanville Hills cellarmaster Martin Moore.

Chardonnay 2010

He has made the elegant, lightly wooded 2010 Durbanville Hills Chardonnay to be exactly that: an easy-drinking wine that pairs exceptionally well with curries, light meat dishes and pastas.

Martin said he had only lightly wooded the wine so as to accentuate its pronounced fruit character. “The wine is crisp with dried peaches, apricot and citrus notes with only a hint of vanilla and butterscotch that gives it such an interesting edge.”

Chardonnay buds early in the season and also ripens relatively early. It is therefore largely spared the vicissitudes of the Cape summer. The grapes for the wine came from vineyards growing about 250 metres above sea level on southern slopes in the Durbanville area. They were picked from mid to late February when the berries had acquired ripe, yellow colours.

“Most of the juice was fermented in steel tanks, left on the lees for six months and stirred every second week. About 75% of the wine is unwooded with the balance matured in new French oak barrels.”

The wine retails for about R48 and is available from liquor stores and supermarkets.
