Reds from Durbanville Hills Wines garnered the judges’ favour at this year’s South African National Wine Show. Nine red wines received awards, of which three took gold. Its white wines received a further five medals.
Of the reds gold was awarded to the 2009 Durbanville Hills Bastion Cabernet Sauvignon Shiraz, the 2009 Rhinofields Pinotage and the 2009 Luipaardsberg Merlot. Of the whites the 2009 Rhinofields Outer Valley Sauvignon Blanc also received gold.
Amongst the ten silver awards, the recently launched 2011 Durbanville Hills Merlot Rosé adds yet another medal to the silver received at the 2011 Michelangelo International Wine Awards and the national category award for the top Rosé from the 2011 South African Terroir Award. The other silver medals went to the 2009 Durbanville Hills Pinotage, the 2008 Rhinofields Shiraz, the 2011 Rhinofields Sauvignon Blanc Semillon, the 2009 Rhinofields Chardonnay, the 2010 Biesjes Craal Sauvignon Blanc, the 2009 Caapmans Cabernet Sauvignon Merlot, the 2009 Rhinofields Cabernet Sauvignon, the 2008 Luipaardsberg Merlot, and the 2009 Rhinofields Merlot.
All four wines winning gold are from the 2009 vintage. Says cellar master Martin Moore: “The 2009 vintage was an exceptional one for the cool climate location of the Durbanville area.
“The winter preceding the 2009 vintage was relatively dry and the crucial flavour-producing ripening period for most cultivars was quite cool, resulting in small berries with concentrated flavour. We have never, in more than a decade, produced red wines of such intense colour as in 2009. Part of the reason is that the differences in day and night temperatures regularly exceeded 10 °C during the ripening period, resulting in the deep, concentrated colours.”
Moore said they were particularly proud to once again receive gold awards across their three wine ranges, as was the case recently at the 2011 Michelangelo International Wine Awards. “We were also delighted that a hugely popular wine such as the 2009 Durbanville Hills Bastion Cabernet Sauvignon Shiraz should receive gold. It also gives credence to our aim of achieving the same quality whether in our limited-release wines or in the wines readily available to consumers wherever they are.”
The three red wines receiving gold – the 2009 Durbanville Hills Bastion, 2009 Rhinofields Pinotage and 2009 Luipaardsberg Merlot – are available from selected liquor outlets and retail for about R67, R119 and R225 respectively. The 2009 Rhinofields Outer Valley Sauvignon Blanc, however, is available at R82 from the Vinoteque on info@Vinoteque.co.za or telephone number (021) 809-8280 or the Durbanville Hills cellar on info@durbanvillehills.co.za or telephone number (021) 558 1300.
