Franschhoek’s iconic Haute Cabrière cellar restaurant has come full circle, with the keys being handed back to Achim and Hildegard von Arnim after 16 fruitful years in the hands of the Gordon family. And the Von Arnims will be using the winter months to do a full refurbishment.
‘With its wonderful soaring arches and the view over the cathedral-like barrel cellar below, this venue has many outstanding features that we’d like to give more emphasis to,’ explains cellarmaster Achim, the man who put the art of sabrage – opening a bottle of champagne using a saber – on the South African map. Achim, whose colourful personality is expressed in his art, will be contributing some of his vibrant pieces to the new decor.
The restaurant is known for its unique location, set into the side of Franschhoek mountain. As part of the new look, more space will also be created for guests to sit outside and enjoy the beautiful vistas over the Franschhoek valley. ‘Over the years, we’ve become an established food and wine destination here in the valley and we look forward to offering our visitors a new experience when the restaurant re-opens its doors just in time for spring under new management,’ says PR manager Hildegard.
The popular tasting room at Haute Cabrière will not be affected by the refurbishment of the restaurant. On cold winter days, a log fire will provide the perfect ambience for guests to settle in for a tasting of the estate’s popular selection of wines. The Haute Cabrière range consists of the elegant Pinot Noir and the ever popular Chardonnay Pinot Noir. The Pierre Jourdan range includes the Belle Rose, Brut, Blanc de Blancs and Brut Sauvage – as well as the Cuvée Reserve.
It has become tradition that every Saturday at 11h00 cellar master Achim von Arnim or his oldest son Takuan conduct a lighthearted and entertaining cellar tour followed by a tasting of the range. Additionally guided tours and tastings are offered Monday to Fridays at 11h00 and 15h00.
Haute Cabrière’s Tasting Room and Restaurant are both situated on Franschhoek Pass (Lamprecht Street), Franschhoek. Tasting Room Hours are: Mon – Fri: 09:00 to 17:00 – Sat: 10:00 to 16:00 – Sunday: 11:00 to 16:00 Contact details for reservations and enquiries: Email reservations@cabriere.co.za or call 021 876 8500. www.cabriere.co.za
