Simonsig sparkles during 2011 Stellenbosch Wine Week and Festival

Simonsig Estate, pioneer of the first Méthode Cap Classique in South Africa, will lend extra sparkle to the 2011 Stellenbosch Wine Week and Stellenbosch Wine Festival with their 40th anniversary celebrations of their iconic Kaapse Vonkel this year.

Sharing this milestone with the Stellenbosch American Express ® Wine Routes, which also turns 40 this year, Simonsig will offer enthusiasts an in-depth tasting and trip down memory lane into the origins of the country’s very first bottle fermented sparkling wine when visiting the estate during the last week of July. This forms part of the myriad of Wine Week cellar door attractions to be hosted by participating Stellenbosch wine farms from 22-31 July leading up to the annual Stellenbosch Wine Festival.

Simonsig will host two exclusive Cap Classique encounters – on 22 and 27 July – which include an intimate vertical tasting of Kaapse Vonkel and the comparison to its base wines as well as a delicious two-course dinner at the estate’s Van Niekerk Room.

Visitors should also pop in at the Simonsig tasting room where an informal tasting of any five estate wines costs R25. Each tasting includes a complimentary taste of this famous sparkler

Alternatively opt for a private wine tasting at the comfort of your own table at R45 per person including a cellar tour and a sabrage demonstration. A minimum of ten people is required for private tastings.

Simonsig also offers an exuberant bubbly tasting of the estate’s famous benchmarks – Kaapse Vonkel; Kaapse Vonkel Brut Rosé; the off dry Encore; and the flagship Cap Classique, Cuvée Royale – at R40 per head.

Other attractions which make for a memorable visit to Simonsig Estate include the

Vineyard Labyrinth – the world’s first productive labyrinth vineyard unique to the estate – as well as a cultivar garden that showcases all the different grape varietals grown on the farm.

Also be sure to visit the Simonsig stand at the Stellenbosch Wine Festival, to be held at the Paul Roos Centre from 28 to 31 July, when cellarmaster Johan Malan and his team will showcase all their latest cellar gems.

The Simonsig Cap Classique Master Classes costs R350 per person including the dinner. Bookings are essential as seating is limited; only 30 people can be accommodated per tasting. For reservations contact Simonsig Estate at Tel 021 888 4900 or send an email to: (lcronje@simonsig.co.za).
