SPIT OR SWALLOW RUK “Doos”
Hey, time to think a bit outside the “box” … Why? It comes with a handle, economical 3 or 5 litre packaging and it also offers a factory fitted tap… it is so convenient to take to any braai. But the best part of it all… No one wants to bug you for a glass of wine… it’s all yours.
Boks wyn, box wine, 5 man kan, dooswyn or papsak… whatever works for you!
Spit or Swallow held the first “South African box wine tasting” on Thursday. What a great initiative by this enthusiastic team! The dress code was casual and we had to sport a moustache in support of Movember.
It was easy to fit the profile, a “sip, shower and shave” and off to the cupboard. Under Thursday I grabbed my cleanest dirty check shirt, a perfect fit with any worn out blue “jeans pants”. My favourite red trucker cap and I was ready – steady – go.
Grand daddy hotel in Long street was the perfect spot for this get-together. On their rooftop you will find the most amazing trailer park and is well worth a visit!
7 Whites and 7 reds all wrapped up in newspaper were ready to be sampled and scrutinized by the team of “trailer trash bloggers” Most of us did not struggle to figure out the scoring system and simple had to score the wine from 1-10. (1 being a “Wife-beater” and 10 for “Disco”)
We’ve “turned some tap” and soon the scores were all calculated. On the reds the Du Toitskloof Pinotage Merlot Ruby Cabernet got the “tap” on the shoulder and for the whites, yes, they’ve all agreed! The best white wine however was the Drostdy-hof Sauvignon Blanc 2010
So what did we learn from this whole experience. That you also find bottled “wife beaters” and the generalization that all box wine is “bad” is not true at all. Many wineries are “boxing” quality wine, not only blends but cultivars too. It offers the consumer an economical and practical solutions
There is so much in the news about being green, eco friendly and sustainability… With a 12″ x 6″ carton footprint, this will not be the last you will read about box wine! lol
