Steenberg Hotel is offering a host of exciting events and special celebrations this festive season, in the spectacular vineyards setting of this historic wine farm in the Constantia Valley. These include the popular annual Christmas Carols Concert, and superb festive dining experiences at its famed restaurants, Catharina’s and Bistro Sixteen82 – both awarded the coveted American Express Platinum Card Fine Dining Award this year.
While the legendary Sunday Jazz Lunch Buffet at Catharina’s remains a hot favourite, there is little to beat the magical Thursday evening ‘Tapas and Flamenco’ evenings at Bistro Sixteen82, a firm favourite among the Cape Town gourmet jet set.
At Catharina’s Restaurant, Chef Garth Almazan will be serving up a great value fine dining experience on Christmas Eve (Saturday, 24 December), with a delectable 4-Course Set Menu at R695 per person, brimming with tasty temptations prepared to perfection. With mouth-watering dishes such as Butter Poached Tiger Prawns served with sauté baby leeks, pommes maxim, and red beet essence; and a melt-in-the mouth Valhrona Chocolate Panforte dessert with drambuie log, walnut snowballs and black cherry lavender coulis on offer, there is no better way to toast this special occasion. Celebrate New Year’s Eve in style on Saturday, 31 December with fine dining at Catharina’s Restaurant that offers a feast for all senses. The embracing ambience, spectacular views and sumptuous selection of dishes on the chef’s 4-Course Set Menu, perfectly complement the charming vineyards setting. At R1195 per person, this is a gourmet treat well worth savouring with a glass (or two) of Steenberg’s best, with music and vibe provided by the resident DJ for the evening.

A short stroll away, cellar door restaurant Bistro Sixteen82, located within the state-of-the-art Steenberg Winery, offers a more informal gastronomic experience. A 4-Course Set Menu will be served on Christmas Day (Sunday, 25 December) at R425 per person, with a 2-Course Set Menu option for children under the age of 12 (R75 per child). Although the Bistro will be closed on New Year’s Eve, guests may savour a New Year’s Day lunch from Chef Brad Ball’s inspired summer menu, on Sunday the first of January, and wander through to the Wine Tasting Bar to taste some of Steenberg’s award-winning wines.

For an unforgettable outing for the whole family, the annual Christmas Carols Concert provides a magical musical evening under starlit skies, with a friendly and sophisticated picnic atmosphere. This event, which takes place from 18:00 to 20:00 on Wednesday 21 December on the rolling lawns in front of the elegant Steenberg Hotel, showcases the musical talent of the 25-piece Cape Town String Ensemble, with the golden voice of tenor Gareth Witten adding a touch of panache. The highlight of the evening, an enchanting candle-lit sing-along to traditional Christmas Carols, is sure to cast a warm glow over the rest of the season. Marius Malan grew up on their family farm, Staart van Paardeberg, on the foothills of the Paardeberg Mountains. Grape growing and producing wine run in the family and it was always Marius's dream to become a winemaker.
