The outstanding quality of the 2009 harvest has yielded the creation of John Loubser’s latest entry for The Nedbank Cape Winemakers Guild (CWG) Auction on 2 October (2010) – Steenberg’s The Magus. Hailed as ‘the thinking man’s wine’, The Magus is the latest in the stable of CWG white wines with a superb track record.
The Magus proudly upholds the status of this premier Constantia Valley winery as one of the top producers of Sauvignon Blanc varietals. Wild and herbaceous with piercing minerality, a full vibrant palate and hints of passion fruit and tangerine, it is elegantly balanced by subtle smokiness and a creamy texture.
James Molesworth, Senior Editor and longstanding Taster for www.winespectator.com, widely recognized as the most authoritative source of wine information in the world, gave The Magus his vote of confidence, while proclaiming this year’s round-up of wines selected for auction at the CWG as ‘the best yet’. He scored Steenberg’s The Magus a healthy rating of 90 points.
In another review of this year’s CWG entries, internationally respected wine expert Stephen Tanzer, who is also editor of the critically acclaimed bi-monthly International Wine Cellar, pronounced The Magus among his favourite wines of those tasted for this year’s CWG auction. ‘There’s something captivatingly wild about this blend’, he cites within his review, describing it as ‘dense, juicy and penetrating, with intense flavours of tangerine peel, minerals and peppery herbs.’ He further attributes its ‘excellent lift and long, tactile and smooth finish’, scoring it a solid 90 points as well.
A renaming of Loubser’s lauded White Savage, which claimed top spot for a white wine for Steenberg Vineyards in the 2008 CWG Auction, The Magus is a sterling hand-crafted wine that has been selected as one of only 7 white wine blends in the line up of 39 exclusive, top quality auction wines for 2010. Only 288 bottles (48 x 6) of The Magus have been produced.
While the White Savage fetched a record-breaking maximum price of R3300 per case of 6 bottles at the 2008 CWG auction, The Magus has the potential to fetch a substantial price this year, in view of its excellent potential for longevity and the superb Sauvignon Blanc crop harvested at Steenberg Vineyards in 2009.
John Loubser is a longstanding member of the select group of just 41 winemakers that constitute the Cape Winemakers Guild. Many of these members represent the current generation of winemakers who continually strive to set new world-class benchmarks for South Africa, and indeed the world. Bidders at the CWG Auction can be confident in the knowledge that they are purchasing wines produced and selected for them by these highly respected winemakers .
The auction is open to the public, and interested bidders can register via the guild’s website, www.capewinemakersguild.com. Uniquely, the selected wines, produced exclusively by members of the Cape Winemakers Guild, are auctioned individually at the CWG Auction and are only available at the Auction.
