A selection of wines from Steenberg Vineyards is being served with Chef Franck Dangereux’s winter menus at The Foodbarn Restaurant in the Noordhoek Farm Village outside Cape Town during the month of July. This food and wine pairing partnership offers diners the opportunity to savour this award-winning chef’s cuisine at affordable seasonal prices, perfectly matched with tastings of selected wines from the superb Steenberg portfolio.
On offer throughout the month of July, diners may choose from either a 3-course menu at R165; a 4-course menu at R185; or 5 courses at just R215 – paired with tastings of choice Steenberg wines. On Wednesdays this gastronomic indulgence is heightened by a cooking demonstration courtesy of Dangereux, to whet the appetite before dinner.
Menus change fortnightly to showcase this intrepid chef’s skill and finesse. The culinary journey may typically begin with a serving of mouth-watering Prawn Fritter and Coriander Samoosa as starter, perfectly matched with a tasting of the Steenberg Brut 1682 Chardonnay Methode Cap Classique 2009, a crisp, refreshing sparkling wine with aromas of fresh granny smith apples and overtones of freshly baked biscuits rounded off with a creamy yet fresh mouth feel.
This could be followed by Crispy Duck Livers with red wine pears & rice vermicelli, paired with the Steenberg Shiraz 2009. The last word in finesse, this full bodied wine with firm structure, lots of ripe berry characters, and great freshness to the finish, leaves a lingering savoury aftertaste on the palate.
Next on the menu, Fillet of Grilled Fish on smoked mash and health ginger broth, may be savoured with a tasting of the Steenberg Sauvignon Blanc 2010, with its lovely tropical notes of litchi and guava on the nose, fading into green pepper and asparagus, ensuring a firm and lingering aftertaste.
A serving of succulent Veal “Minute” (lamb cutlets) with sun dried tomato risotto and basil jus would be delicately paired with a tasting of the Steenberg Merlot 2009, a multi layered red wine with flavours of buchu, basil and mint on the nose, opening up into dark chocolate and cederwood overtones. Rounding off this stylish taste sensation may be a serving of Baked goats cheese with quince compote & pumpkin seeds, followed by a melt-in-the-mouth Lemon verbena feuilleté dessert.
Steenberg Vineyards has long been recognised as one of the top White Wine Cellars in South Africa, with not only Sauvignon Blanc, but also Semillon emerging as flagship wines. Set amidst the vineyards of a working wine farm at the foothills of the Steenberg Mountain (Stone Mountain) in Constantia, Steenberg was named Global Winner Wine Tourism Services in the Great Wine Capitals’ Best of Wine Tourism Awards 2011. Recent accolades include earning five stars in the Platters Guide 2011 for both the Steenberg Magus 2009 and Steenberg Magna Carta 2009. The Steenberg Semillon 2010 was voted onto the Top 100 SA Wines ratings guide this year (2011), also achieving a Gold Medal at the prestigious International Decanter World Wine Awards.
