Classic food and wine sizzles with cosy gatherings around the fireplace
Waterkloof, the spectacular new ‘cellar in the sky’ outside Somerset West with its arresting architecture and panoramic views over False Bay, sizzles with cosy gatherings around the open fireplace in their wine tasting lounge during the 2010 Stellenbosch Wine Festival from 1 to 5 July.
Cocooned in a contemporary glass and concrete sphere, friends and family can warm up to classic European style wines and culinary delights during daily wine tastings in this slick lounge with its over scaled, picture like views of Waterkloof’s amphitheatre of vineyards and fynbos. Here a two meter diameter open fireplace surrounded by comfortable seating sets the scene for informal, private wine tastings enjoyed with a cheese platter, curried mussels and fries or delicious lamb pie – available at R70 per serving.
The tasting lounge spills onto a gorgeously appointed ‘glass box’ restaurant, where food and wine lovers can indulge in a special three course Winter Warmer Menu at R190 per person.
Or why not saddle up for a picturesque Waterkloof wine tasting on horseback. Hosted in partnership with the adjacent Orion Stables and Riding Academy, these fun outrides through vineyards and indigenous flora culminate with a tasting of some of Waterkloof’s finest cellar gems served with a ‘ploughman’s platter for lunch.
Bookings for the Waterkloof Winter Warmer Menu and the wine tastings on horseback are essential. Contact the estate on Tel: 021 858 1292 or visit www.waterkloofwines.co.za.
With all these activities and much more on offer at other participating wine farms, a visit to the Stellenbosch Winelands is a must for both locals and visiting soccer fans alike during this year’s festival.
