PALMS CENTRE – PLATTELAND MARKET – LOCK STOCK

I visited a really funky mini-Covent Garden over the weekend – in Woodstock, Cape Town. Who knew? A well kept secret; what a great place to spend a Saturday morning. Well away from the general hullabaloo of The Biscuit Mill – a welcome change.

Palms Centre and Platteland Market

Situated in the Design District, on the quieter end of St Lowry’s Road, The Palms Centre is a showcase for Cape Town’s creative designers. A décor and lifestyle emporium, it hosts the enticing Die Platteland Market on the 2nd and 4th Saturday of every month, showcasing 40 colourful produce traders – delicious eats and drinks. A real bonus is free undercover parking, with easy access off the N1. I thoroughly enjoyed my oysters, that were so fresh they still smelt of the sea, and wandering around with my glass of bubbly. A huge paved area at the main entrance provides a great place to take the weight off your feet, and enjoy food and drink bought from the traders.

The centre is home to Wetherlys, the well known furniture people, along with many other décor and design shops. On market Saturdays, the main paved area is filled with the produce market and the first floor balcony, that runs right around the building under the Covent Garden style glass roof, hosts a local design and creative market, an ideal browse for furniture, décor and gifts, all under one roof.

Most interesting is the market on the first floor, The Lock Stock, where you will find cool stuff made by creative people. The Lock Stock has been set up with the idea of giving local designers and artists a showcase, in conjunction with Die Platteland Market, to show their locally designed and manufactured wares – art, jewellery, clothing, collectibles, home wares, and object & furniture design.

Die Platteland Market and The Lock Stock are held, undercover, on the 2nd and 4th Saturdays of every month, from 9am to 2pm, with free undercover parking. The Palms Centre, 145 St Lowry Road, Woodstock, Cape Town.

About The Palms: Located in the heart of trendy Woodstock in Cape Town, The Palms Décor and Lifestyle Centre offers a solution for every design – from quaint wooden furniture and custom-made kitchens, to luxurious textiles and carpets, antique wooden doors, and recycled kitchen and bathroom products. The building dates back to the previous century when baker William Baumann built a factory for Baumann’s Biscuits and Duens Bread, both household names in South Africa. The Palms’ peaceful atmosphere is perfect for laid-back browsing through its variety of upmarket design and décor stores, or for catch-up conversations over superb coffee. A chocolate museum, imported champagne and a wine cellar add to the elegant ambience. The Palms also houses spacious offices and various locations for hire, and offers 300 undercover parking bays for its customers.
