BOSMAN FAMILY VINEYARDS CELEBRATES THEIR HERITAGE AND THEIR FUTURE WITH THE AWARD-WINNING ERFENIS 2010

IN celebration of Heritage Day, Wellington farm, Bosman Family Vineyards, is finally releasing the eagerly-awaited, award-winning Erfenis 2010 at the annual Bosman Release Celebration on 24th September. This flagship wine, also known as the Family Cuvée, is a Cape Blend and is a selection of the very finest barrels of wine from their 250 year old cellar in Wellington.

Winemaker Corlea Fourie says “Every year there are some barrels of wine which just taste wonderful in the cellar, and sometimes those individual flavours get lost when I make up the final blends for our normal range of wines. So I wanted to try and keep the very best batches together to make a true flagship wine.”

Even before its official release, the Erfenis has been making waves. At the inaugural Absa Perold Cape Blend Competition last year, the wine was named as one of the Top Three Cape Blends in the country, garnering Corlea an iPad and a trip to France. Aged in mostly French oak, with just a little American wood on one of the components, the wine is densely-fruited with plenty of black berries and cherries, hints of cedar and clove wrapped up in plushy, elegant tannins. The final blend is the result of much thoughtful debate within the cellar and Corlea is confident that it will continue to improve over the coming years.

But even without the accolades, the Erfenis is a very special, very personal wine, both for the Bosman family and for Corlea herself. The family have been on the farm for eight generations since they first settled at Lelienfontein in the late 1700’s. Throughout that time, the family has worked daily at growing the enterprise in ways that respect the land and the people who have tended it. The path of respect for what came before has stood Bosman Family Vineyards in good stead since its earliest days, and its diversified interests have seen the company rise as one of the most successful vine nurseries in the Southern Hemisphere and producer of exceptional wines from one of the oldest vineyards in South Africa.

The Erfenis, which means ‘Heritage’ in Afrikaans, is a tribute to the Bosman family and a celebration of the part they’ve played in South Africa’s wine history.

It’s particularly apt that the maiden vintage Erfenis comes from the 2010 vintage as this year saw a new chapter in the Bosman history when the family welcomed the ninth generation into the world with the birth of managing director Petrus Bosman’s first son. 2010 was also the year that Corlea gave birth to her twins and brand manager Neil Büchner welcomed the arrival of his daughter and so, whilst it was being made and throughout the year, the Erfenis became known as the ‘Baba Wyn’ or ‘Baby Wine’. The wine marks a memorable time in the lives of them all and, with 260 staff members now shareholders in the business, a range of facilities and upliftment opportunities available on the farm and Fairtrade accreditation, the Erfenis links three hundred years of winemaking past with the promise of a happy, successful future, for the entire, extended family on the Bosman farm.

The Bosman Family Vineyards Erfenis 2010 is available from the farm for R300 per bottle.
