KNORHOEK BAGS VERITAS GOLD FOR CHENIN BLANC 2010
Knorhoek Estate, the time-honoured Stellenbosch estate recognised for intensely fruity Chenin blanc wines with a fuller taste appeal, has clinched a 2011 Veritas Gold medal for the latest vintage of this versatile white variety.
The triumphant Knorhoek Chenin Blanc 2010 stems from 35 year old bush vines that have reached optimal balance in growth and production through time. The grapes were hand picked at full ripeness to craft this rich, mouth-filling wine, which winemaker Arno Albertyn now fondly refers to as his ‘Golden Oldie’.
“The idyllic terroir of our vineyards, tucked away in a corner of the Simonsberg where wild lions once roamed, imparts the intense aromatic fruitiness and full-bodied structure of full ripe Chenin blanc. The grapes are of superb quality expressing their true varietal character with a wonderfully balanced natural acidity and terrific concentrated flavours,” shares Arno.
The unwooded Knorhoek Chenin Blanc 2010 flaunts a bright golden straw hue with an aromatic nose displaying flamboyant pineapple and citrus flavours enriched with hints of wild honey. The abundance of fresh sun-ripened tropical fruit on the palate intertwined with crisp classic mineral notes evokes a lingering richness on the aftertaste.
“The honeyed ripeness of late harvested Chenin blanc grapes is beautifully complemented by the flowery tropical fruit in its youth,” adds Arno.
Bursting with crisp, fruit-driven flavours, this lively wine is an exceptional food partner and stands up well to bold curries and spicy Thai cuisine. It is the quintessential accompaniment for seafood dishes such as mussels, shellfish and kabeljou. This easy drinking style of wine also pairs well with duck and turkey.
The Knorhoek Chenin Blanc 2010 is available from R46 per bottle directly at the cellar door or at leading wine outlets and supermarkets countrywide.
Knorhoek Estate won a total of 8 medals, including Silver for its Shiraz 2009 and Cabernet Sauvignon 2009 at this 2011 Veritas Awards, which celebrates 21 years as SA’s biggest wine competition and most highly esteemed indicator of quality market ready wines.
