SIMONSIG TRUIMPHS WITH ONLY CAP CLASSIQUE DOUBLE GOLD AT 2010 VERITAS

Estate scores big with medal tally of 3 Double Gold and 2 Gold medals

Simonsig Estate has triumphed at the 2010 Veritas awards with a hat trick of Double Golds including the only two Double Gold medals awarded for Méthode Cap Classique this year. As the estate who gave South Africa its first bottle fermented sparkling wine back in 1971, the latest Veritas achievements show once again that when it comes to producing world-class Cap Classique, Simonsig still has the Midas touch.

Truimphs at Veritas 2010

Simonsig’s Cap Classique Double Gold glory is shared by the flagship Cuvée Royale 2005 Blanc de Blancs and the 2006 vintage of the illustrious Kaapse Vonkel – the country’s first French-inspired, bottle fermented sparkling wine produced by the late Frans Malan almost 40 years ago.

The 3rd Simonsig Veritas Double Gold medal was awarded to The SMV Shiraz/Mourvèdre/Viognier 2008 – a delicious Shiraz-driven red blend.

The two Veritas Gold medals went to the ever popular unwooded Simonsig Chenin Blanc 2010 and the highly acclaimed Simonsig Red Hill Pinotage 2008.

Simonsig scooped a total of 19 medals across a broad spectrum of flagship, ultra-premium and easy-drinking wines at this year’s Veritas, South Africa’s most authoritative wine competition, underlining the all-round winemaking talent of this reputable Cape Winelands pioneer.

“The Veritas medals across our entire range shows that our commitment towards consistency and quality excellence is paying off at Simonsig. We are particularly delighted to see that the wines on which we have built our reputation, can still compete against the best in the business and make us proud,” says Simonsig cellarmaster Johan Malan.

More about the newly released Veritas Double Gold Simonsig Cuvée Royale 2005

Made from only the finest and most delicate Chardonnay (96%) and Pinot noir (4%) cuvées, Simonsig Cuvée Royale 2005, which spent five years on the lees, adds sheer ‘so-fizz-tication’ to festive celebrations with its complexity, finesse and fine mouse.

Kaapse Vonkel 2006 Double Gold

Simonsig Cuvée Royale is only made in exceptional vintages with previous releases stemming from 2004, 2003 and 1999, 1996 and 1992, a clear indication of the selective manner in which this prestigious Cap Classique is crafted.

Recognised for its sheer elegance, balance and capacity to improve over time, Simonsig Cuvée Royale 2005 captivates with a delightful golden hue and a remarkably fine pearly mousse dancing to the surface. The base wine underwent tank fermentation with part of the Chardonnay (38%) fermented and matured in seasoned French oak barrels for six months lending rich complexity and a subtle oak toastiness to this Cap Classique.

Upfront roasted almonds, buttery brioche and ripe yellow apple aromas dominate the nose while the unmistakably citrus flavours of the Chardonnay show gorgeous finesse and a classic mineral freshness on the finish.

Try the Simonsig Cuvée Royale 2005 with fish, crayfish, fresh oysters, caviar or artichoke hearts. It is also the perfect sip with fresh dessert such as fruit salad or sorbets.

The select Simonsig Cuvée Royale 2005 retails from around R165 per bottle and is available at the cellar or leading wine outlets and restaurants countrywide.
