NO ADDED SULPHUR IN THE NEW SIMONSIG PINOT NOIR BRUT ROSE

Simonsig launches new Pinot Noir Brut Rosé with no added sulphur exclusive to Woolworths: One of South Africa’s leading Cap Classique specialists, Simonsig Estate, winner of the only two 2010 Veritas Cap Classique Double Gold medals, has launched a new, no-added-sulphur, Limited Release Pinot Noir Brut Rosé, made exclusively for Woolworths. This is the first Rose No Added SO2 MCC in South Africa, another of the many firsts Simonsig has brought to the market.

Simonsig were delighted to take on the challenge when Woolworths Wine Team briefed them to come up with this innovative and exclusive product. Woolworths has more demand than supply for this innovative and health-driven style of wine – with no added sulphur dioxide and has a growing and successful range of reds and sparkling wines made in this way.

No added Sulphur

Composed of Pinot noir (95%) and a kiss of Chardonnay, the Woolworths Limited Release Pinot Noir Brut Rosé 2009 exudes finesse with luscious Pinot noir fruit, a delicately fine, enthusiastic mousse and the faintest rose petal hue.

“Pinot noir is renowned for its contribution to the fullness and body of a quality-driven Cap Classique. The beauty of this noble red grape variety lies in its ability to add full-bodied structure to the wine without losing its delicacy and finesse,” shares Simonsig cellarmaster Johan Malan, son of the late Frans Malan who gave South-Africa its first French-inspired, bottle-fermented sparkling wine back in 1971.

Described by the winemaker as a Méthode Cap Classique that ‘aims to satisfy what the senses long for’, this eminently stylish blush adds new luster to South Africa’s lineup of dry rosé Cap Classiques and expands the range of styles offered by this Stellenbosch landmark. The grapes where whole bunch pressed; a time consuming process which Johan values as the make or break stage where most of the quality can be gained or lost. The wine was inoculated with a special Prise de Mousse yeast to start the primary fermentation.

“The yeast selection is critical as certain yeasts actually form sulphur dioxide in the wine which can be problematic when one tries to make a wine containing no sulphur. By not adding sulphites, the wine retains more of its original flavour but then good ‘housekeeping’ and more diligent and mindful winemaking practices are of utmost importance to avoid any oxidation and to preserve and prevent spoilage of the wine,” explains Johan.

Following the time-honoured method of second fermentation in the bottle to create the fine mousse of a true Cap Classique, the Woolworths Limited Release Pinot Noir Brut Rosé 2009 spent 14 months on the lees allowing its lively, fruit enriched character to develop to the full.

A subtle fragrance of strawberries and a red berry aroma reveals this cuvée’s red grape origin and gives it an alluring freshness and unparalleled subtlety and finesse on the palate. A mouth-filling roundness shows ample fresh fruit intensity and body, which is perfectly balanced by a subtle acid structure that leads to a crisp, refreshing dry finish.

This dazzling Cap Classique is ideal as an aperitif for summer entertaining while it also complements poultry, smoked salmon and red fruit desserts exceptionally well.

The Woolworths Limited Release Pinot Noir Brut Rosé 2009 No Added SO2 retails at R99.95 per bottle at selected Woolworths stores countrywide.
