HARVEST REPORT 2012 (Video Blog)

Winemakers often refer back to a specific vintage. Ever wondered why and is it really that important to make a fuss about a quick heat wave, slope, too much rain or that cool sea breeze?  Why is it all so important?

The viticulturist and winemaker must be aware of what happens in the vineyard at all times. And yes, climate plays a fundamental role in what eventually ends up in the bottle. When vintages of the same cultivar / wine is compared, one must be able to pin-point the difference in taste and flavour profiles and determined if it is because of cellar practices or vineyard and climate changes (all part of micro and macro terroir).

One wine region will outperform the other in a specific year in terms of quality and yield just because of external influences. The winemaker can’t be blamed nor complimented for this, but if the winemaker is well informed and knows the vineyard, he / she can be proactive in their thinking and make the best possible wine based upon history.

To get a better understanding and expert opinion on the 2012 harvest, we interviewed wineries in Stellenbosch, Overberg, Paarl and Durbanville. Over the next 4 weeks we will share short video harvest reports, each week a new region/ward. (The clips are 1-2 minute)
