SEVEN SPRINGS VINEYARDS MAKES THEIR DEBUT ENTRY

SOUTH AFRICA welcomes a new vineyard as their first vintage hits the shelves: Seven Springs Vineyard is delighted to present their first wine, the 2010 Sauvignon Blanc, from their first harvest.

Seven Springs Vineyard; named after the seven natural springs of the nearby spa town of Caledon; is situated on the R320 road at the base of Shaws Mountain between the seaside town of Hermanus and the Overberg spa town of Caledon. UK based owners, Tim and Vaughan Pearson, are confident that the vines, benefitting from superb shale derived soils and cooling Atlantic Ocean influences, will produce an excellent range of wines.

OverbergTim feels that bringing this first wine to market is similar to becoming a father all over again. “This is the moment we have been waiting for. In 2006 cattle were driven off this land for the last time and the vines we selected and planted have now produced what we feel is a wine of quality, to be enjoyed by all who manage to get their hands on a bottle.”

Talented young winemaker Riana van der Merwe, 26, explains that “For this vintage we allowed the Sauvignon Blanc grapes to ripen fully and left the pressed juice in contact with the lees to ensure we produced wine with complexity and minerality. We are really pleased with the resulting wine and excited by the reviews from critics.”

The Seven Springs Sauvignon Blanc has an aroma of ripe apples with hints of lime, citrus and passion fruit flavours on the palate. It is limited to 4,400 bottles worldwide for this vintage but can be ordered on-line from Cybercellar (www.cybercellar.co.za) and purchased directly from The Wine Village in Hermanus (www.winevillage.co.za)

In 2011 Seven Springs Vineyard will also bottle their lightly oaked Chardonnay and spicy, dark berry, Syrah, with Pinot Noir completing the range in 2012. Tim says “Working with Riana, our intention is to let each varietal express individual characteristics by minimal vineyard intervention and careful nurturing in the winery. We have an exceptional vineyard site that will allow each cultivar to develop unique flavour profiles.”

Tim Pearson – owner: Tim was born in the village of Crowland, Lincolnshire, England in 1953. After leaving school Tim started working for Boots Farm Sales in the agricultural business. Working his way up to an Agronomist, Tim moved to Stratford upon Avon to work in 1977. He met Vaughan on the 18th of October 1979 and the couple married one year to the day later on October the 18th 1980. After having 2 daughters, Kim born January 1984 and Katie born August 1986, Tim decided, in 1988, to join with a couple of friends to build a 5 star hotel in Mauritius, where the Pearson family lived for 6 months. After failing to obtain funding for the project (it was so close to being a success) Tim took a job as a Sales and Marketing Manager for a cleaning firm in Leamington Spa, Warwickshire in 1991. After 2 years Tim decided to start his own cleaning company, Goldcrest Cleaning Ltd, in October 1993, the company moving to its own premises in Warwick in July 2000. It is the success of Goldcrest Cleaning that has enabled Tim to indulge in his real passion, wine, with the setting up of Seven Springs Vineyard.

Riana van der Merwe – Winemaker” Riana was born in Paarl, South Africa and aged 26 attended Stellenbosch High School before graduating with a Batchelor of Science in Agriculture, majoring in Viticulture and Oenology, at the University of Stellenbosch in 2006. She has experience in South African cellars L’Ormarins, Seidelberg, Hidden Valley and Backsberg and seasons at Stonestreet Winery, California, Adelsheim Vineyard, Oregon and Domaine Francois Villard, Northern Rhone, France. Riana came to Seven Springs highly recommended: Louis Nel, winemaker at Hidden Valley Wines, sums up this talented young lady by saying – “During her time at Hidden Valley, Riana proved herself to be a remarkable employee. She is extremely passionate about winemaking and adds maximum value to the cellar at all times. She is a great asset to any vineyard“.

This would be a very biased comment on this blog, because it is written about us. What I would like to say publicly is that I am very proud of our young winemaker Riana and our vineyard manager Peter Davison. We have a small but exceptional team of comitted people working at Seven Springs. Watch this space.
A big thank you to Charles for publishing this.

I have known Tim and Vaughan Pearson for a number of years and watched their enterprises grow through the ability, determination and exceptional taste which runs through the entire family.
I have nor doubt that this wine will be well worth the money and will be buying. It will be interesting to see what they will bring onto the market in the years to come.
    Santé
